About Prof. Doron Amsalem

Doron Amsalem

Prof. Doron Amsalem is an Israeli board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist with extensive clinical and academic experience in both Israel and the United States. He is a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York and serves as an attending child and adolescent psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI).

Education and Training

Prof. Amsalem earned his MD from the Medical School at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. He completed his residency training in child and adolescent psychiatry with honors at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel. He subsequently completed advanced fellowship training at Columbia University and NYSPI, with a clinical and academic focus on the assessment and treatment of post-traumatic stress and trauma-related conditions. He holds an active medical license in the State of New York.

Clinical Work

Prof. Amsalem’s clinical work spans several complementary settings. He maintains a private practice in New York City (Upper West Side) and in Herzliya, Israel (Mentalics Clinical Center). In addition to his private practice, he serves as a clinical consultant at NYSPI, where he provides expert consultation and guidance to psychiatrists and multidisciplinary medical teams across New York State in the care of individuals with individuals with multifaceted mental health needs. This breadth of experience supports a comprehensive view of the continuum of care, from in-depth diagnostic evaluation and focused psychiatric consultation to longitudinal treatment in individuals with multifaceted mental health needs.

 

In his clinical work, Prof. Amsalem emphasizes a developmentally informed and family-aware understanding of each youth’s presentation, careful assessment of risk and protective factors, and thoughtful integration of pharmacologic, psychoeducational, and therapeutic recommendations. The evaluation incorporates information from parents and relevant educational or treatment settings to support an accurate and nuanced clinical formulation.

 

His clinical approach is characterized by diagnostic caution, integrative thinking, and a high degree of sensitivity to the individual’s internal experience, with the goal of building a trusting therapeutic relationship and a clear, individualized, and realistic treatment plan.

Research and Academic Work

Prof. Amsalem’s research focuses on mental health stigma, with particular emphasis on the development and evaluation of brief, video-based interventions and strategies to promote help-seeking among youth and other at-risk populations. He directs the VOICE Lab (Video Outreach and Identity-Centered Engagement Lab), which centers the voices and lived experiences of individuals and families, using short, thoughtfully designed videos to foster understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage engagement with care across diverse communities. He is the author of more than 90 peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals and is actively involved in international research collaborations in the field of mental health.
